Learning to fly near Toronto, without the queue
Peterborough Airport (CYPQ) — a 7,000 ft runway and an uncontrolled circuit
Most people in Toronto start at the nearest airport and discover what training in busy airspace costs them: holding short behind four aircraft, a circuit extended for arriving traffic, and the meter running through all of it.
What the drive buys you
An uncontrolled circuit
No sequencing behind airline traffic. You fly the circuit, not a queue.
A practice area minutes away
Open country and the Kawartha lakes to the north, instead of a transit through a control zone.
A 7,000 ft runway
Long, wide and quiet — the kind of runway that makes early landings easier to learn on.
You make the drive once a lesson. Airspace delays are paid for every lesson.
What we teach at CYPQ
- Student Pilot Permit — the first step, and the exam with it
- Recreational Pilot Permit — fewer hours, local flying in good weather
- Private Pilot Licence — the licence most people mean
- Night Rating — night flying, and the smoothest air of the day
- Instrument Rating — flying on instruments, in cloud
- VFR Over-the-Top — between a private licence and an instrument rating
- Multi-Engine Rating — arranged on a rented twin, on request
Single-engine training on Cessna 152 and Cessna 172, one instructor to one student. Package prices and hourly aircraft rates are published in full on our aircraft and rates page — nothing is quoted only on request.
Getting to Peterborough Airport
| From | Distance | Typical drive |
|---|---|---|
| Downtown Toronto | about 135 km | about 1 h 30 |
| Scarborough | about 115 km | about 1 h 15 |
| North York | about 125 km | about 1 h 25 |
| Etobicoke | about 155 km | about 1 h 45 |
Distances and times are approximate and by the usual route — check your own before a first lesson. Many students book two lessons on one trip out, which turns the drive into a fortnightly journey rather than a weekly one.

Start with a flight, not a form
A sightseeing flight puts your hands on the controls with an instructor beside you, and it counts toward your licence if you carry on.
